Waymo or robotaxi accident as a passenger: what to do next
Robotaxi services are now operating in several cities. If you were hurt while riding in one, for example from a collision, sudden braking, or while getting in or out, these steps can help protect your health and your options.
Steps to take
- Get medical attention. If you are hurt, call 911. Use the in-car help button or the app to report the incident to the operator as well.
- Save your ride information. Screenshot the trip receipt, route, ride ID, time, and any in-app messages or support chats.
- Document the scene. Take photos or video of the vehicle interior and exterior, other vehicles involved, and your injuries.
- Collect witness contacts, including other passengers and bystanders.
- Request a police report if another vehicle was involved or anyone was injured.
- Keep records of medical visits, missed work, and expenses.
Review the rider terms
When you signed up for the app, you accepted terms of service. These can include arbitration clauses, notice requirements, or other provisions that affect how a claim proceeds. Keep a copy, and have an attorney review them; some terms may or may not be enforceable depending on the circumstances and state law.
Who may be responsible
Depending on the facts, responsible parties can include the robotaxi operator, the vehicle or system manufacturer, another driver who caused the crash, or others. Our article on robotaxi and driverless car injuries explains these in more detail.
Don’t rely only on the app’s support process
An operator’s customer support team represents the company. You can cooperate with reporting while still getting independent advice before accepting any offer or giving a detailed recorded statement.
Have questions about your situation? An attorney can review the facts with you for free and with no obligation.
