What to do after a self-driving or driver-assist crash
These steps apply to crashes involving any driver-assistance or self-driving system, including Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised), GM Super Cruise, and Ford BlueCruise, and to robotaxi rides.
- Get medical care. Call 911 and get checked even if you feel fine; some injuries appear later.
- Report the crash. Many states require crash reports; in California, injury crashes must be reported to the DMV (form SR-1) within 10 days.
- Preserve vehicle data. Driver-assist vehicles record data about speed, steering, and system status. Do not let the vehicle be repaired, sold, or scrapped before talking to a lawyer.
- Document everything. Photos, dashcam or Sentry footage, witness names, and the police report number.
- Be careful with statements. Avoid giving recorded statements to insurers or posting about the crash online before getting advice.
Liability can involve the driver, the vehicle manufacturer (product liability), or others, depending on the facts.
